Marta was just 13 when her parents decided to marry her off to a 73-year-old man because they couldn't afford her schooling. When the girl refused, she was thrown out of her home. This is her story.

In Mozambique, 41 per cent of girls are married before they turn 18, mainly due to poverty. The UNICEF-UNFPA Global Programme to End Child Marriage has been empowering girls and young women in Mozambique since 2016, with the support of local partners.

In Botswana, Boteti Health District’s maternal mortality reduction initiative, the Ntlo ya Botsetsi Support Group, was established in 2018 to reduce maternal deaths in the district. Through the initiative, 18 members were trained on the prevention of maternal mortality. Implementation of the initiative has resulted in a significant decline in maternal deaths, with the district reporting only two such deaths in 2019, one in 2020 and none in 2021.

Training received by midwives at a midwifery skills lab has reduced maternal and neonatal deaths in Migori County, Kenya, with UNFPA support. Nurses and midwives make up 80 per cent of the health workforce in the country, and they are often the first health professionals that patients meet when they seek care. By sharpening midwives' skills in emergency obstetric care, they are averting deaths and disabilities.
