CARMMA - Campaign for Accelerated Reduction of Maternal Mortality in Africa

Five years after the launch of the Maputo Plan of Action on Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SSRHR) in the Africa Region, the African Union in collaboration with UNFPA launched CARMMA, the Campaign for Accelerated Reduction of Maternal Mortality in Africa, in 2009. This was in response to slow progress in reducing maternal, neonatal and child mortality rates in many African countries.

Faith-Based Organisations

As in all other regions of the world, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) has long considered faith-based organisations (FBOs) in Africa to be highly relevant partners in the work it does on the continent. Over the years they have become engaged in improving efforts to reduce maternal mortality, achieving an end to violence against women, building more gender-conscious communities and in initiatives that support the education of the girl child.

At a 2006 regional media conference in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo on how to better cover population issues on the continent, a continent-wide media network on population and development was launched, with an interface (secretariat) to help stimulate greater interest and facilitate the revival of commitment to better reporting and programming on key development issues.
