Job purpose

UNFPA is the UN agency champion of young people. A number of programmes are implemented by UNFPA ESARO targeting the integration of HIV and sexual and reproductive health services as well as sexual reproductive health rights with a focus on adolescents and young people.

The Regional office mobilized extra budgetary funds to support the implementation of regional programmes aiming at empowering adolescents and young people aged 10-24 to protect themselves from STIs including HIV, unintended pregnancies, unsafe abortions, early marriages, gender-based violence and harmful cultural practices while promoting gender equitable norms and protective behaviours  as well as to to improve the sexual and reproductive health and rights of all people in the East and Southern African Region, with a focus on adolescent girls and young people, pregnant and breastfeeding women, people living with HIV, men who have sex with men (MSM), LGBTI, and sex workers (SWs).

To improve content, reach, design and coverage of the UNFPA ESARO regional programmes strategies and activities, UNFPA is looking for a Social Behavior Change Communication analyst. He/She is a highly motivated, creative individual with experience and a passion for working for and with adolescent and young people, pregnant and breastfeeding women, people living with HIV, men who have sex with men (MSM), LGBTI, and sex workers (SWs) ensuring that their knowledge and skills towards adoption of healthier sexual behavior and access to integrated services in Eastern and Southern Africa is increased.

Major Activities/Expected Results

The main objectives of the post are to:

  1. Manage TuneMe (TuneMe.org) and ensure support to country offices that have already launched the platform while facilitating the expansion of TuneMe to other ESA country utilizing the generic URL.
  2. Manage and facilitate the scale up of the music project including production of songs and popularization though the establishment of partnerships with media houses.
  3. Expand the online and offline visibility of UNFPA ESARO regional youth programme and the Joint United Nations Regional Programme on SRHR/HIV and GBV Integration increase knowledge sharing across countries and sectors;
  4. Scale up of existing social media presence and strategies for increased coverage and reach, and improve content of the webpage within the ESARO website specifically on the Safeguard Young People Programme and the Joint United Nations Regional Programme on SRHR/HIV and GBV Integration;
  5. Mobilize young people to utilize social media to advocate for increased investment in youth developments and programmes at national and regional levels;
  6. Provide leadership on the graphic design and layout of UNFPA ESARO regional documents and products;
  7. Support documentation of best and/or promising practices working in close collaboration with the Country Offices for both regional programmes;
  8. Produce media articles for the two regional programmes to contribute to the UNFPA ESARO and HQs’ websites;
  9. Identify opportunities for strategic partnerships, resource mobilization, innovation and coverage for the two UNFPA Regional Programmes.

S/he will specifically:

Manage TuneMe sustainability and scale up:

  • Manage TuneMe and ensure support to country offices that have already launched the platform while facilitating the expansion of TuneMe to other ESA country utilizing the generic URL.
  • Support the development and popularization of a TuneMe tool kit to be shared with HQ for scale up globally.
  • Coordinate and facilitate collaboration with Praekelt Foundation and ensure collaboration with the IT department to facilitate migration of TuneMe to UNFPA hosting platforms.
  • Support countries that have launched TuneMe – on M&E, content development and use of Content management System (CMS);
  • Monitor the reach of TuneMe and related FB pages using the TuneMe platform as well as Google analytics working in collaboration with the M&E Specialist.
  • Support countries in the roll out of TuneMe Marketing strategy: optimising relationships with youth to consolidate TuneMe as the information source of choice to optimise engagement and drive registration on the site and other branded platforms such as Facebook.

Manage and scale up the music project:

  • Manage and facilitate the scale up of the music project including production of new songs.
  • Establish partnership with media houses for the popularization of the Music project;
  • Maintain good relationships and facilitate communication with the SYP artists for further engagement;
  • Identify in collaboration with the South Africa Country Office a South African artist to be included in the music project.
  • Advise the SYP Regional Coordinator and any other relevant colleagues on new trends and ideas to be considered to maintain the programme youthful and relevant to the target audience.

Social media

  • Support innovative and effective social media presence and campaigns to grow young people audience and community engagement for both regional programmes;
  • Build, engage and manage an audience through various and relevant social media platforms and channels (i.e. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube etc.)
  • Maintain and expand SYP Tweeter handle and FB page as well as the webpage within the UNFPA ESARO website.
  • Leverage social media
  • Promote youth programme products such as the mobisite, the webpage and the music album and videos through social media.

Content management

  • Create, edit, produce and post relevant online and social media content at the right time, through the appropriate channels, related to the project activities and issues covered
  • Administrate the creation and publishing of relevant, original, high-quality content; and edit content received
  • Create a regular publishing schedule
  • Implement, manage, update and maintain a social media content calendar
  • Support documentation of promising and/or best practices in collaboration with the Countries implementing the programme.

Graphic design, Brand development and Communication products

  • Provide input and support on the design and layout of UNFPA ESARO youth programme documentation and products
  • Development of consistent brand awareness, visual content and online reputation
  • Create designs and well as work with graphic designers
  • Organize visual assets such as photographs, illustrations, info-graphics
  • Produce SBCC materials with the inclusion of info-graphics
  • Contribute to Annual Report as well as its design and inclusion of info-graphics.
  • Develop programme brief/evidence based material to be utilized for advocacy as well as strategic partnerships purposes

Monitoring and reporting of all products – e.g. TuneMe; Music project social media

  • Submitting regular monthly reports about the online and social media activity following a project reporting template
  • Measure results on a regular basis to establish return on investment
  • Conduct social media content audits to understand audience preference and the impact of different approaches
  • Identify and measure key performance indicators such as audience growth; audience profile; audience engagement; user acquisition; content reach; engagement by content type; response rate and quality
  • Prepare updates and reports for team and management meetings, for resource mobilization purposes
  • Any other duty as identified by supervisor and/or Communication Advisor

Work Relations

The Social Behaviour Change Communication Analyst will work under SYP Regional Programme Coordinator, in collaboration with the Programme Manager for the Joint United Nations Regional Programme on SRHR/HIV and GBV Integration and the overall guidance of the UNFPA Regional Communication Advisor

Job Requirements

Education: 

  • Advanced university degree in relevant areas – social behavior change communication, communications, journalism, public relations or other related field from reputable institution

Knowledge and Experience:

  •  At least five years of progressively professional experience and proven track record in developing and implementing social media strategies

Technical Experience and Skills

  • Demonstrates creativity and documented immersion in social media;
  • Displays in-depth knowledge and understanding of social media platforms, their respective participants (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube and Pinterest etc.) and how each platform can be deployed in different scenarios.
  • Good knowledge and experience in Graphic design and production of info-graphics;
  • Previous proven experience in documenting promising or best practices;
  • Expertise in programme such as Adobe Creative Suite (especially InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop) and Microsoft Office basics (Word, Excel PowerPoint). Photography experience and basic skills in video editing and production a plus.
  • Knowledge and interest on Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights is an asset.
