Hiring office: Communications Unit

Purpose of assignment: 2020 has been declared as the International Year of the Nurse and Midwife in honour of the 200th birth anniversary of Florence Nightingale. Nurses and midwives are key to the achievement of Universal Health Coverage because they play a critical role in achieving universal health coverage. However, without radical action and public support, The World Health Organization estimates there will be a worldwide shortfall of nine million nurses and midwives by 2030. To this end, the office will contract services of a graphics designer for print and social media in support of the work of midwifery, sexual and reproductive health and rights, key international events and related activities. The consultant will report directly to the UNFPA Regional Communication Advisor, and the Regional Health System Specialist will provide technical guidance.

Scope of work: The consultant will be responsible for preparing the design of documents, newsletters, brochures, flyers, invitations, posters, infographics, etc. as needed for 2020 the year of the Nurse and the Midwife; the Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights bundle, follow-up to the commitments made at the Nairobi Summit on ICPD25 and other thematic areas related to UNFPA’s core mandate. The application of creative and innovative communication approaches is an important element to achieving the goals of the Organization.

Key Deliverables

  • Assist with design of social media assets on a daily basis
  • Provide design inputs for presentations for all sections on an ad-hoc basis
  • Design invitation for events with images
  • Input into proposals and pitch presentations for sections
  • Design save the dates for distribution
  • Input into the development of donor communication materials.
  • Carry out any other duties as may be required by UNFPA leadership.

Duration and working schedule: The consultancy will be for a period of 8 months from 1 April to 30 November 2020.   

Place where services are to be delivered: UNFPA ESARO, 9 Simba Road, Sunninghill, Johannesburg.

Monitoring and progress control, including reporting requirements, periodicity format and deadline: The selected consultant will be required to provide regular updates to the Regional Communications Advisor.

Supervisory arrangements: The selected consultant will work under the supervision of the Regional Communications Advisor and the Regional Health System Specialist will provide technical guidance.

Expected travel: Possible travel within South Africa as needed.

Required expertise, qualifications and competencies, including language requirements:

The selected consultant must meet the following minimum criteria:-

  • A high school graduate with 6 years of documented experience with graphic design, ideally using social media. A degree in graphic design or related discipline is desirable.
  • Ability to review documents, interpret social development information and synthesize information from various reports and presentations.
  • Excellent skills in data visualization and data journalism.
  • Knowledge of and ability to use social media – Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and other forms of digital technology to promote social issues.
  • Training and experience in using Adobe products – Creative Cloud, InDesign, Illustrator, PhotoShop – essential.

Languages: Fluency in English is essential

Inputs / services to be provided by UNFPA or implementing partner (e.g support services, office space, equipment), if applicable: UNFPA will provide office space and a laptop.
