Purpose of Consultancy: 

UNFPA ESARO strongly promote young professionals from youth led
initiatives in the region and to engage and mentor them in core SRHR
interventions of UNFPA. The junior consultancy is required to give
professional opportunities to young leaders and build their skills to transit to
successful professional endeavour. This specific consutancy in UNFPA
ESARO is looking for a Junior consultant to support our work related to: 1)
Youth and Adolescent participation and leadership 2) Child Marriage
Stream II work under the Africa Spotlight Programme; and 3) the UNFPA-
UNICEF Global Programme on Child Marriage Phase II

Scope of Work:

The junior consultant will be hired under the overall guidance of the Deputy
Regional Director and under the direct supervision of the Adolescent and
Youth Specialist managing the UNFPA-UNICEF Global Programme on
Child Marriage and the Child Marriage Stream II component of the Africa
Spotlight Programme. The consultant will also work closely with the SYP
Regional Coordinator, the CSE Specialist and the rest of the ESARO Youth
team. The main tasks are:

Youth Participation and meaningful engagement (50%)

 Support the conceptualization and implementation of meaningful
youth participation including trainings and capacity building
initiatives for youth in East and Southern Africa (ESA)
 Participat in the development of training manuals on youth
engagement, youth development and leadership;
 Liaise and providing linkages with existing networks, programmes
and structures at the continental level with special emphasis to
ESA, programmes and structures to facilitate lessons learning and
sharing of experiences towards enhanced youth engagement in
health, education and overall development
 Participat in the institutionalization of youth engagement platforms
including supporting the establishment of regional Advisory Panel
and dialogue platforms;
 Facilitat the sharing of best practices, comparable lessons and
experiences on youth empowerment with particular focus on ESA
led programs
 Contribut to project knowledge productions, including facilitating
validation and creative write-ups
 Participat in the dissemination of Project outcomes, including
support to Communications Unit towards the adaptation of a Social
Media Strategy for meaningful youth participation;
 Facilitat with the innovation focal points the identification of
innovation hubs and youth labs in Africa to enhance youth
participation in innovation initiates and sharing of best practices on
the same as part of the broader framework of youth empowerment
and job creation as envisaged in the AU Agenda 2063
 Contribute to strengthening the work on Adolescent and Youth
participation in collaboration with the Extended Youth team and
external partners such as Restless Development, AYAN and Scout.
 Support engagement with AfriYAN e.g. EC meetings, AfriYAN
AWP, Y-ACT and AfriYAN regional regional youth accountability for
the ICPD25 commitments.

Programmes on ending child marriage (Spotlight and GPECM 50%)

Support the implementation of knowledge management and communication
activities of the Child Marriage programmes under the UNFPA-UNICEF
Global Programme and the Africa Spotlight Programme (50% of
consultant’s time).

These tasks include but are not restricted to:
 Support the finalization, design and dissemination of Key
Messages and Recommendations on Child Marriage
programming
 Support national and regional assessments on the Impact
of Child Marriage and youth participation
 Support the development of knowledge products and
south-south sharing on Child Marriage and youth
participation
 Support the African Union Campaign on Child Marriage
particularly the communications and capacity building
initiatives
 Support country offices within the Global Programme on
Child Marriage particularly on their communications and
knowledge management
 Support the regional communications for the Global
Programme on Child Marriage - for example, video and
photo documentation of stories from the field on Child
Marriage, as well as on development and dissemination of
animated videos on the SADC Model Law on Child
Marriage

 Any other related tasks as required

Schedule

The consultancy will last for 6 months from 01 May to 31 October 2021 with
the possibility of extension until the end of the year. It is a full-time online
consultancy. Payments will be made on a monthly basis.

Some mission travel may be expected. 

Requirements: 

Education

At least a bachelors degree in the field of public health,
development, SRHR and communications is required

At least four (4) years of relevant experience is required if the
candidate holds a BA degree. In case of a candidate holds relevant
Masters degree, 2 years relevant experience is required.

Experience

 Below the age of 35
 Prior experience in the East and Southern Africa region required
 Prior experience of leading/working with youth-led organizations is
an asset
 Prior experience in the UN as an intern, UNV or Africa Union
volunteer is an asset
 Prior experience in supporting adolescent and youth work as well
as harmful practice required
 Strong presentation, communication, and writing skills in English
required; working knowledge of another UN official language
desirable.
