ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia – A strong call for women’s empowerment towards achieving the goals of Agenda 2063 ended the 24th African Union Summit in Addis Ababa on 31 January.

The AU Agenda 2063 framework was adopted during the summit, which was themed women’s empowerment and development towards Agenda 2063. The theme recognises that women and youth are Africa’s greatest asset, said newly elected AU Chairperson, Robert Mugabe, who is the President of Zimbabwe.

He called on AU Member States to implement all the decisions adopted during the summit in order to leverage their resources for the benefit of their people, EWN reports.

The formation and Terms of Reference of the African Group of Negotiators on the Post-2015 Development Agenda, which will be the single negotiating body acting on behalf of the continent, were endorsed by the Assembly.

The Assembly recommended the extension of the mandate of the African Union Support to the Ebola Outbreak in West Africa (ASEOWA) and called on Member States to lift all restrictions imposed on Ebola affected countries.

Progress made in peace-building and post-conflict reconstruction in The Comoros and Madagascar was also welcomed.
