Fact: family planning is a human right. Yet 214 million women worldwide lack access to family planning. In 2016, contraceptives provided by UNFPA prevented more than 11 million unintended pregnancies and 3 million unsafe abortions.

More than 2000 youth, aged 16-30 years old, visit Centre Jeunes Kamenge in Burundi every day. The centre runs learning, recreational and cultural activities that help develop young people's skills and promote peace and solidarity among them. With the support of UNFPA, the United Nations Population Fund, and other partner organizations, it also provides HIV and sexual and reproductive health services in a youth-friendly environment.

Burundi has the second highest population density in sub-Saharan Africa, with 379 inhabitants per square kilometre. On average each woman has 6 children in her lifetime. Every 4 hours, 1 woman dies of pregnancy or childbirth-related causes. Family planning is key to sustainable development in Burundi.
