The marginalization of indigenous groups led to the outbreak of violence in the Democratic Republic of the Congo in 2016, displacing more than 300,000 people. UNFPA in the DRC, together with the provincial government of Tanganyika, has launched a project to promote peace and reconciliation. This focuses on boosting work for young people and supporting them to become agents of change to advance social cohesion.

Obstetric fistula is a debilitating injury that usually results from obstructed labour, one of the major causes of maternal deaths. A fistula can usually be repaired with reconstructive surgery.

Most women affected by this injury do not know about the treatment available, or they are unable to afford it or to reach the facilities where it is available. At Mendefera Referral Hospital in Eritrea, UNFPA is supporting the efforts of the Eritrean government and partners to heal fistulas and restore hope for the women who suffer from this condition.
