2015 theme: Men in Charge? Gender Equality and Children’s Rights in Contemporary Families
The International Day of Families is observed on the 15th of May every year. Proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in 1993, it reflects the importance the international community attaches to families. The day provides an opportunity to promote awareness of issues relating to families and to increase knowledge of the social, economic and demographic processes affecting families.

When midwives are empowered, fully trained, well equipped and certified, they can help avert two thirds of maternal and newborn deaths. Yet only 22 per cent of countries in the East and Southern Africa region have enough adequately educated midwives to meet the basic needs of women and newborn infants.

Leave no one behind: think, decide and act together against extreme poverty
The International Day for the Eradication of Poverty has been observed every year since 1993, when the United Nations General Assembly designated this day to promote awareness of the need to eradicate poverty and destitution in all countries. Fighting poverty remains at the core of the Millennium Development Goals(MDGs) and the development of thepost-2015 development agenda.
