An assessment of Reproductive Health Commodity Security (RHCS) and Comprehensive Condom Programming (CCP) was carried out in 20 countries in the Southern and Eastern Africa (ESA) sub-region in May/June 2011.
The assessment findings and validation meeting highlighted a number of important achievements and challenges that showed capacity gaps. The important role played by UNFPA in providing technical and financial support and in some cases direct procurement was highlighted and acknowledged as an important component of condom programming in most countries.
Among the recommendations made to respond to the identified challenges were to build country capacity to implement CCP (including the harmonization of RHCS and CCP coordination mechanisms at country level), to support country level implementation with nominative guidance and quality.
In order to address these challenges and the resultant recommendations by building on existing successes, UNFPA ESARO is to conduct a CCP capacity building workshop for 12 selected countries in Eastern and Southern Africa.
