International Women’s Day, celebrated globally on 8 March, is dedicated to reflecting on the achievements of ordinary women who have made an extraordinary impact in their countries and communities, and to celebrate the contributions of women all around the world.

This year's day focuses on increasing efforts to achieve gender equality by 2030, the deadline for meeting the Sustainable Development Goals. The official United Nations theme is: Planet 50-50 by 2030: Step it Up for Gender Equality.

UNFPA’s work expands the possibilities for women and girls to lead healthy and productive lives. In addition to promoting women's health care, UNFPA advocates for gender equality at the international and national levels. UNFPA also spreads messages about gender equality in a variety of settings, including humanitarian crises where women are extremely vulnerable to exploitation and abuse and classrooms where students are learning about comprehensive sexuality education
