Regional Task Team Meeting on Revitalization of HIV Prevention in East and Southern Africa

The ESA region has made measurable progress in reducing HIV. New HIV infections among adults declined significantly in several countries in the region between 2005 and 2013. Overall, the estimated number of new HIV infections in ESA declined by 32% between 2005 and 2013. A 2013 review of the United Nations General Assembly High Level Meeting on AIDS (HLM) Target 1 on prevention of sexual transmission revealed some successes, but overall insufficient progress in the region. Half of new HIV infections worldwide still occur in ESA region.

The purpose of this meeting is to bring together high level experts from country and regional level to serve as a time-bound advisory task team to develop a common vision and strategy for the revitalization/re-branding of HIV prevention and to ensure its implementation in champion countries in the ESA region, within the context of Fast Track. The meeting will also serve as a platform to brainstorm and identify opportunities for generating momentum for reinvigorating/revitalizing HIV prevention agenda in the region.
