Background
The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) recognizes that child marriage and female genital mutilation or cutting (FMG/C) are perpetuated and entrenched by harmful cultural practices, customs, and traditions. Addressing such negative factors and their influence on the national legal and policy environment and the day to day life of citizens, especially girls and women, is a key priority in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.
With traditional leaders playing a critical role in shifting negative social norms driving harmful practices to promoting positive norms and alternative practices, the Council of Traditional Leaders and UN Women with UNFPA East and Southern Africa, is organizing a virtual event “The Role of Traditional Leaders in Advancing Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights”
Traditional leaders #Standing4HerRights
Traditional leaders will be discussing how they have been contributing to improving Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights to demonstrate good examples and create a discourse of positive influence with other traditional leaders. This platform aims to drive the transformation and eradication of harmful cultural practices, customs, and traditions to end child marriage, FGM/C and other harmful practices through the leadership of traditional leaders.
UNFPA Executive Director, UN Women Executive Director, and poetry reading artist will be joining the Traditional Leaders to enrich the dialogue and platform.
