The UNFPA-UNICEF Joint Programme on the Elimination of FGM is witnessing remarkable progress across East and Southern Africa. In 2023, the Joint Programme supported the integration of 8,817 grassroots and community-based organizations within coalitions and networks working to end FGM and engaged 111,781 frontline workers.

Uganda is notably on track to eliminate FGM by 2030, while Kenya, Eritrea, and Ethiopia are demonstrating significant advancements. Kenya engaged over 800,000 women and girls in FGM prevention dialogues and Eritrea has achieved 16 FGM-free subzones.

UNFPA remains committed to empowering women-led organizations and amplifying local solutions to accelerate the elimination of FGM. The 2023 annual report provides a comprehensive overview of these achievements and our ongoing efforts to create a brighter, FGM-free future for every girl and woman in the region.
