Ensuring access to providers with midwifery skills for antenatal, intra-natal and post natal services by communities and health facilities is one of the key global strategies supported by UNFPA to reduce MMR, and the International Confederation of Midwives (ICM) is a critical partner in this endeavour. To further this initiative, UNFPA will sponsor the ICM Third International Confederation of Midwives (ICM) Africa Regional Congress 2013.

This triennial conference is of significant importance for midwives on the continent and aims to influence policy, build capacity and enhance the competency and skills of midwives in improving maternal and infant health across Africa.

Sessions at the conference are structured to provide an opportunity to educate, train or update delegates on topical issues such as maternal and newborn interventions to save lives, family planning, comprehensive abortion care, immunization and nutrition care. Policy makers, programmers and researchers will also share experiences, evidence and best practices to strengthen midwifery for improved maternal, newborn and child health services.

The Africa ICM Conference will be preceded by a meeting of Confederation of African Midwives Associations (CONAMA), including their inauguration from 14-16 July in the same venue.
