Menstruation is a natural and essential part of reproductive health for women, girls and people who menstruate, yet it is often accompanied by various challenges and barriers that impact their well-being and quality of life. Inadequate access to clean water, sanitation facilities and proper waste disposal systems exacerbates these challenges and perpetuates stigma and taboos surrounding menstruation.
This technical brief focuses on the crucial role of Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) infrastructure and services in addressing menstrual health challenges in Africa. It discusses the necessity of appropriate sanitation facilities, clean water, and proper waste disposal systems for women and girls to manage menstruation hygienically and with dignity.
