Transforming Lives
Last year saw the end of UNFPA East and Southern Africa Regional Programme Action Plan 2014-2017, which focused on women and young people as our priorities. We close this phase with a slew of impressive achievements, in line with the Sustainable Development Goals, especially SDG 3 on Health, SDG 4 on Education and SDG 5 on Gender Equality. This, our 2017 annual report, details UNFPA's achievements in advancing sexual and reproductive health and rights in the region, for women and young people in particular.

This report is a situational analysis on the scale, determinants, consequences and responses to violence against women (VAW) in South Africa. It finds that VAW is highly prevalent in the country. More than half of the women murdered in 2009 (56 per cent) were killed by an intimate partner.
